Southern Magnolia

Southern Magnolia

I know, I know, I’m a stodgy old-fashioned traditionalist.  I have a limited imagination.  I’m not willing to embrace change.

What am I talking about?  I’m talking about the fact that I like my Christmas trees to be roughly conical and probably pine-like.  With lights.  And decorations.

And yes, as I wrote last week I’m not blind to all the trauma around a tree decision in the first place: (with roots/cut/fake) and all the planet-wrecking implications of choosing the wrong kind.  But San Francisco City Council’s initiative to provide living trees that they’ll then take away and plant for you after the season, while tempting when I first heard about it, foundered on the rocks of my stodgy old-fashioned traditionalism.  They’re providing trees that it makes sense to plant out in this city, with this climate.

And I’m sorry, but I just can’t wrap my head around hanging lights on a Southern Magnolia or a Small Leaf Tristania.
